Director of Public Affairs (Energy Transition Projects), Europe

Our Leading role in the clean energy transition sees the creation of a new role. Reporting to the Global Executive Director of Government Relations, the Public Affairs Director – Europe will direct Air Products’ European policies and objectives involving local, country and EU governments.
The incumbent will work with the EMEA leadership team, Business Development and Mega Project Teams to create and execute formal government relations plans in support of the full range of Air Products activities in Europe, but with a clear priority placed on the Company’s activities related to the Energy Transition. The job holder will lead a team whose activities will be aligned with the Company’s business objectives, including in green hydrogen for mobility and industry and blue hydrogen for industry. The role holder will be responsible for designing a comprehensive program for monitoring policy, legislative and regulatory risk and advocating for outcomes that are consistent with objectives defined together with the leadership of our businesses.

As the Director Of Public Affairs you will lead Government relations, planning and execution:
  • Help to frame business strategy by providing context of political background and goals to business leaders.
  • Create and execute effective engagement plans to achieve the agreed objectives.
  • Develop relationships with key legislators, their staffs/committee staffs and regulators and engage business executives in relationship-building
  • Lead an effective team across Europe to support these objectives.
  • Oversee the identification and prioritization of legislative, regulatory and political risk at the EU and country governmental levels
  • Engage closely with business management, business development and major project teams to jointly identify opportunities to engage with governments to achieve Company objectives
  • Support C-suite executives and business unit leaders to appropriately engage government officials and champion public policy initiatives.
  • Work across cross functional teams to understand policy impact and develop asks leveraging the organizations expertise
  • Manage and leverage an established network of external public policy lobbyists at EU and National level
  • Lead public policy outreach and coordination with trade associations, alliances, coalitions, to align resources in support of Air Products priorities
  • Communicate the status of public policy to Air Products business leaders
  • Work with corporate communications, investor relations, and company leadership on designing external messages
  • Monitor and respond to external regulatory and legislative initiatives
The role holder will become an expert in Air Products business objectives. They will represent us credibly and authentically and be capable of influencing external bodies. They will be a true SME, intuitively understanding the implication of external policy on our business.

About you:
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent – MBA
  • Extensive experience of the Energy Sector with solid technical and business acumen
  • Experience of liaising with cross European government, bodies and legislation
  • Established network of relevant public policy leaders
  • Understanding of policy, politics and regulation and it’s interface with business
  • Fluent in English (Dutch or German, highly beneficial)
  • Strategic and analytical capability to execute major business objectives through government engagement
  • A skilled influencer, able to present and gain buy in internally and externally at the highest levels of seniority
