Tessenderlo (BEL) or Bevaix (CH) – 4 to 6 months

Subject: Hysteresis compensation for Hall-based current sensing in Electric Vehicles(EV)

Project Description

As an intern at Melexis, you will be engineering a hysteresis compensation algorithm for Hall-based current sensor solutions targeting automotive EV applications. A Hall-based current sensor requires a ferromagnetic material that induces a high hysteresis error.

More specifically, you will:

  • Develop a deep understanding on the hysteresis effect and the contributing factors (material, dimensions, temperature)
  • Characterize a set of standard ferromagnetic shields and cores with different materials and dimensions
  • Define relationships between the hysteresis error and the parameters previously defined (ex: dimensions, temperature)
  • Develop a compensation algorithm to rule out the contributors and improve the accuracy of the current sensor
  • Validate your model in an embedded software on our latest current sensor

Expected results

  • Develop a clear understanding of the hysteresis effect
  • Prepare a dataset of measurements to feed your model
  • Develop a model that provides a compensation formula given the properties of the ferromagnetic element
  • Validate the model by implementing it inside a microcontroller

Requirements

  • Self-motivated student, eager to learn, curious and enterprising with strong problem-solving mindset
  • Good understanding of the magnetism. It will be further developed during the internship or master thesis
  • Strong experience with electrical measurements and characterization in a lab environment
  • (Strong) experience with modeling in Matlab Simulink, VBA or Python
  • (Strong) experience with embedded C/C++. GitLab is a plus

Offer

Melexis Current sensing branch has increased significantly in the past few years, closing projects with major OEMs such as Tesla (X/S/3/Y), Renault (Zoé, E-TECH) or BYD. Supported by the growing electrification of vehicles, Melexis is expanding its current sensing branch: upon excellent work and strong motivation, this Master Thesis or Internship will lead to a permanent position offer.

Joining Melexis for your internship is the opportunity to build up your know-how in a high-tech, international and dynamic company, benefit from the experience and training of our experts and enjoy the welcoming and friendly atmosphere of our teams. The Bevaix office is specialized in Hall Sensors and Wireless technology and counts 70 employees. The Tessenderlo office is the headquarter with a focus on all sensors and actuators.
