Where you fit in

Based in Brussels and reporting to the Head of Corporate Relations (CR) Europe, this role leads Shell’s external advocacy and public affairs and internal communications efforts in Belgium and Luxembourg. The role is critical to proactively position the company, develop stakeholder relations, and enhance the company’s license to operate in both countries. You will work in close interaction and collaboration with local businesses and functions, Country Chairs, CR colleagues in other European capitals, as well as Group Policy & Advocacy.

What’s the role?

As Corporate Relations Manager – Belgium & Luxembourg, we’ll be looking to you to:

  • Lead Corporate Relations in both countries, supporting Shell’s Country Chairs, businesses, assets, and projects.
  • Ensure a holistic approach that includes brand/reputation management, government and media relations, issues and crisis management, corporate communications, social performance and investment, new business development project support, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Partner with the business to bring in external insights and intelligence, to ensure informed decision making, and to position Shell in Belgium and Luxembourg as the strategic partner of choice.
  • Develop and execute credible and effective Corporate Relations plans that reflect an in-depth understanding of Shell strategy, business, and local priorities, and can influence and shape internal and external outcomes.
  • Manage the internal communications for Belgium and Luxembourg.
  • Understand and influence the opportunities, challenges, trends, issues, and non-technical risks in the external landscape through sensing and active engagements including governments, NGOs, civil society groups, academics, and other opinion leaders.
  • Effectively manage Shell’s policy and advocacy priorities in the countries and support EU efforts as required.
  • Communicate Shell’s capabilities, achievements, products/services, and thought leadership to build preference with partners, customers, and other stakeholders as well as provide counsel around performance, behaviour, and communications.
  • Oversee an impactful and sustainable programme of social investment with clear plans for each initiative to become self-sustaining.
  • Act as a role model on safety and ethical leadership, ensuring high standards of behavior in support of the Country Chairs.

  • Be curious: bring the outside in; assess and adapt practices from other organizations, industries, or countries.
  • By preference: Have experience with political processes and energy sector

Hard skills

You should have:

  • Deep understanding of the country and local business environments, media landscapes, and key decision-makers/influencers.
  • Sophisticated understanding of the political landscape (federal and regional) as well as a sound understanding of European policy making is a must.
  • Good understanding and knowledge of the business drivers and threats relevant to the resources/energy sector and Shell's business.
  • Strong CR related background (covering reputation management, government and media relations, issues and crisis management, corporate communications, social performance and investment, and stakeholder engagement) with several years of experience.
  • Ability to communicate in a multi-lingual environment: excellent written and verbal skills in Dutch, French and English is a must. Basic knowledge of German and/or Luxembourgish is an advantage.
  • Ability to write effectively and accurately under time pressure.
  • Ability to judge the impact of a particular activity, event, or decision on Shell's reputation and advise on necessary action.
  • Capacity to work across multiple businesses, prioritize competing demands and manage complexity.

Company Description

Shell has been present in Belgium and Luxembourg for over 100 years and currently operates a network of around 300 Mobility sites. In Belgium, Shell’s trading and supply activities include the supply of fuels to our downstream business and the purchase of products for sale to industrial and retail customers. Shell supplies jet fuel to aviation customers in both countries and has two manufacturing units in Ghent, one for greases and one for petrochemicals catalysts.

As part of Shell’s energy transition activities, Shell offers low carbon solutions for trucks through a network of six liquefied natural gas stations and partners with Ionity to enable high-power EV charging on highway sites. Shell Recharge Solutions provides at-home and at-the-office EV charging solutions and access to the largest public charging network through the Shell Card. A recently announced partnership with Gamma will bring Shell’s fast EV charging solutions to its Belgian locations. Shell is also looking into opportunities to invest in renewable power generation in Belgium.
